Working the Fields

Rice Farming in South Korea

An impressive feat, planting a rice field.  No machine has been created that can match a single farmers delicate hands placing each individual seedling into the prepared soil.  The dedication for planting and maintaining these fields leads to a permanent deformity in the lumbar spine of the elderly.  The mark of a farmer can not be disguised.  The position they maintained for decades working the rice paddies deteriorates their spinal column, locking them in a permanent bend at the hips.  Many of the elderly must walk with canes to support their upper bodies because they are restricted to a nearly 90 degree bend at the hips.  A great sacrifice.  One that earns then nothing but a sense of respect when in their presence.
